Announcement: Cancelation Policy Update July 2023
-
@Matthew-A This is now clear, thank you so much.
-
@Matthew-A I'm realizing now, as so many of my regulars have cancelled classes this month (often just hours prior), that 1 consequence of my canceling green dots (even within all the legit guidelines) is that AI will not replace those student-cancelled classes as it had once done.
Not to be a Doomsday Debbie, but it really bums me out that even when we're told that we have a right to cancel green dots, we're still somehow punished for it 😕
-
@Lisa-276 I think that we all tend to forget that scheduling is not predictable. The system tries to fill the empty slots, but it is obvious that this month so far the clients have scheduled fewer classes, so the system can manage as much as it gets. Also, more of us were off around Christmas and New Year, and now that more teachers are opening slots, it is logical that we cannot have as many as we could. To add to this, Demo classes have been scarce for me this month(read 0), meaning that is not a season for new students to enroll, bringing fewer potential classes to all of us.
-
@Marko-I OK, so the supply/demand issue exacerbates the algorithmic set-up that penalizes you for making any changes to your schedule. As you stated in another thread about MPT hours, you're rewarded for stability and punished for instability. I see why that helps to manage operations.
But if the cancellation policy is truly meant to be more amenable to teachers, then I'd think that changing our MPT hours and cancelling classes within the timeframe shouldn't impact AI's prioritization algorithms at all. Personally, I think prioritization algorithms should be based on performance merits.

Can you please explain what performance merits that would be?
-
@Marko-I Performance reviews i.e. video evaluations, repeat clients, regular bookings vs AI-bookings, avoiding illegitimate cancellations and absences.

But that is all that AI already does. AI arranges classes depending on client preferences, and teachers' performances, repeat clients(followers), ratings, etc.
The algorithm is made by human, not AI.

@Marko-I I was considering what Matthew mentioned previously:
"It may slightly impact one of the factors that AI uses for assigning classes (those that aren't selected by the student). One of those factors (there is a very long list) is your availability at said hour, e.g. the system will prioritise a teacher who is available at a certain day/time regularly vs someone who just adds that day/time now and again."
-
@Lisa-276 What Matthew said is also valid... If I was available for the same time slot for the past 600 days, I would be prioritized before someone available for the past 300 days.
-
@Marko-I that would mean you never took a holiday either?
-
@Katarina-1 Some people do not take holidays. Once I worked for 900 days straight. I don't do that anymore though. :D
P.S. Some people take more days per year, some less, we are all different individuals, and have different needs. Last year I didn't work around 60 days, Sundays included.
-
@Katarina-1 In Marko's extreme example - yes same schedule for that day and hour. (Every day/hour is taken in isolation).
-
@Lisa-276 That is what I was trying to communicate...it is only one factor in a long list of factors that AI uses.
I wasn't saying that stability would top that list of factors or state which ones it overrides as I don't know how the ranking system works as there are so many factors. But, in a head-to-head re stability, the more stable teacher would win that's what I was trying to communicate.
Of course, this has nothing to do with 1v1 classes chosen by followers. And January can be a bit quieter month (my experience this month) - no matter whether you have ever cancelled a class or not.
Hope that makes it clearer and that things pick up for you asap.
-
I know this has probably nothing to do with this post but I want to take some time off and wondering when it's the best time to do it... Is it likely to be quieter than normal during the upcoming new year (The Lunar New Year)? I can't remember what my schedule looks like during that time of the year.
-
@Royce-0 From what I recall being mentioned before, if you've already logged into a class that day, it may give you extra time. So for those back to back classes, it gives you longer because you've already been there and logged in but I think it is best to just say 3 minutes because clocks can be a little out of sync and whatnot. For me I'm in the habit now of the second my class says 50/20 I know to click the next class and get into it.
-
@Mina-0 It's hard to say. I think last year a lot of families travelled after having stayed home for so long in past years. I'm not sure what will happen this year. It may help to ask students now about their plans for the festival period so that you have more of an idea of what your students will be doing.
-
@Matthew-A That's great advice! I've only had one junior telling me so far that he's going away to Japan. I'll ask the others to get an idea. I guess it's pretty much like over here, some families go away and some stay at home. I've just realised my passport's expired 🤦♀️ so I'll have to postpone my plans.
